Onychomycosis is a fungal infection that causes the nails to become discolored, thickened, and brittle. This condition is commonly found in toenails but can also affect fingernails. The infection occurs when fungi, typically dermatophytes, invade the nail bed leading to visible damage. Traditional treatments for onychomycosis include antifungal creams and oral medications, but they may take time or have side effects. Laser treatment has become an effective alternative, as it uses targeted light to penetrate the nail and destroy the fungus without harming surrounding tissue. The heat from the laser kills the fungal cells, promoting healing and reducing the risk of recurrence. Laser treatment for onychomycosis is generally safe, with minimal side effects, and can offer quicker results than n other treatments, making it a popular choice for those seeking relief from this persistent condition. If you have developed toenail fungus, it is suggested that you contact a podiatrist who can discuss whether laser treatment is right for you.
Laser treatment can be an effective way to get rid of toenail fungus. If you have any questions about laser treatment, consult with one of our podiatrists from Eastern Carolina Foot & Ankle Specialists. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality treatment for fungal nails.

Diagnosis for Fungal Nails
Fungal infections are diagnosed by fungal culture and microscopy. This will rule out any other conditions such as nail trauma, psoriasis, lichen planus, and onychogryphosis.
What Is Laser Treatment?
Laser treatment is a non-invasive, safe, quick, and painless procedure that uses the heat from a laser to kill fungus in the nail. Each infected nail is targeted with a laser for several minutes. The treatment is usually utilized several different times over a select period. During this time, a podiatrist will keep an eye on the infection.

Sever’s disease, or calcaneal apophysitis, is a common cause of heel pain in children and adolescents, especially during growth spurts. It occurs when the heel bone grows faster than the surrounding muscles and tendons, creating tension and inflammation at the growth plate where the Achilles tendon attaches to the heel. Activities like running, jumping, or sports with repetitive impact can worsen this condition. To protect young feet, ensure children wear properly cushioned, supportive footwear during activities. Stretching exercises for the calves and hamstrings can relieve tension on the heel. Avoid overtraining or prolonged high-impact sports, and encourage rest if pain arises. If your child is complaining of heel pain, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for an accurate diagnosis and personalized treatment plan, keeping kids active while reducing the risk of long-term discomfort.
Sever's disease often occurs in children and teens. If your child is experiencing foot or ankle pain, see one of our podiatrists from Eastern Carolina Foot & Ankle Specialists. Our doctors can treat your child’s foot and ankle needs.
Sever’s Disease
Sever’s disease is also known as calcaneal apophysitis, which is a medical condition that causes heel pain I none or both feet. The disease is known to affect children between the ages of 8 and 14.
Sever’s disease occurs when part of the child’s heel known as the growth plate (calcaneal epiphysis) is attached to the Achilles tendon. This area can suffer injury when the muscles and tendons of the growing foot do not keep pace with bone growth. Therefore, the constant pain which one experiences at the back of the heel will make the child unable to put any weight on the heel. The child is then forced to walk on their toes.
Symptoms
Acute pain – Pain associated with Sever’s disease is usually felt in the heel when the child engages in physical activity such as walking, jumping and or running.
Highly active – Children who are very active are among the most susceptible in experiencing Sever’s disease, because of the stress and tension placed on their feet.

Toenail fungus is a common condition that causes thickened, discolored, and brittle nails. It typically begins as a white or yellow spot under the tip of the nail and can spread, making the nail appear distorted. The main cause of toenail fungus is fungi that thrive in warm, moist environments like sweaty socks, damp shoes, or public areas such as swimming pools or showers. Sharing personal items, like nail clippers or towels, can also increase the risk of infection. Treatment for toenail fungus often includes antifungal medications, either topical or oral, to clear the infection. In some cases, a podiatrist may recommend laser treatment or, in severe instances, partial removal of the affected nail. Because toenail fungus can be persistent and difficult to treat on your own, visiting a podiatrist ensures proper diagnosis and effective treatment. If you are dealing with toenail fungus, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist.
If left untreated, toenail fungus may spread to other toenails, skin, or even fingernails. If you suspect you have toenail fungus it is important to seek treatment right away. For more information about treatment, contact one of our podiatrists of Eastern Carolina Foot & Ankle Specialists. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
Symptoms
Treatment
If self-care strategies and over-the-counter medications does not help your fungus, your podiatrist may give you a prescription drug instead. Even if you find relief from your toenail fungus symptoms, you may experience a repeat infection in the future.
Prevention
In order to prevent getting toenail fungus in the future, you should always make sure to wash your feet with soap and water. After washing, it is important to dry your feet thoroughly especially in between the toes. When trimming your toenails, be sure to trim straight across instead of in a rounded shape. It is crucial not to cover up discolored nails with nail polish because that will prevent your nail from being able to “breathe”.
In some cases, surgical procedure may be needed to remove the toenail fungus. Consult with your podiatrist about the best treatment options for your case of toenail fungus.

Gout is a form of arthritis caused by the buildup of uric acid crystals in the joints, leading to sudden and intense pain, redness, and swelling. It most commonly develops in the big toe, causing intense pain and discomfort. The accumulation of uric acid occurs when the body produces too much or fails to eliminate enough, resulting in the formation of sharp crystals that deposit in the joints. Over time, if gout is left untreated, it can lead to the formation of tophi, which are lumps or deposits of uric acid crystals under the skin. Tophi can appear around joints and can cause permanent damage to the affected areas if not properly managed. Prompt treatment and lifestyle changes can help manage gout and prevent the development of tophi. If you have developed gout, it is suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can help you to manage this painful condition.

What Is Gout?
Gout is a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. It often develops in the foot, especially the big toe area, although it can manifest in other parts of the body as well. Gout can make walking and standing very painful and is especially common in diabetics and the obese.
People typically get gout because of a poor diet. Genetic predisposition is also a factor. The children of parents who have had gout frequently have a chance of developing it themselves.
Gout can easily be identified by redness and inflammation of the big toe and the surrounding areas of the foot. Other symptoms include extreme fatigue, joint pain, and running high fevers. Sometimes corticosteroid drugs can be prescribed to treat gout, but the best way to combat this disease is to get more exercise and eat a better diet.

Blisters on the feet occur when fluid accumulates between layers of skin, often as a response to friction or pressure. Repeated rubbing from poorly fitting shoes or intense activity can irritate the skin, leading to the formation of these protective fluid-filled sacs. Blisters on the feet may also arise from burns, extreme cold, or medical conditions like eczema or diabetic neuropathy. Depending on the cause, blisters can be painfu, making walking difficult. It is not recommended to pop blisters yourself as this may lead to infection, which may require medical attention. A podiatrist can safely assess and treat foot blisters, especially those that are recurring or linked to underlying health issues. This foot doctor can drain the blister under sterile conditions, recommend footwear modifications, and address infections as needed. Professional care also reduces the risk of complications, such as worsening pain or more serious infections. If you have a problematic foot blister, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for safe treatment.

Foot Blisters
Foot blisters develop as a result of constantly wearing tight or ill-fitting footwear. This happens due to the constant rubbing from the shoe, which can often lead to pain.
What Are Foot Blisters?
A foot blister is a small fluid-filled pocket that forms on the upper-most layer of the skin. Blisters are filled with clear fluid and can lead to blood drainage or pus if the area becomes infected.
How Do Blisters Form?
Blisters on the feet are often the result of constant friction of skin and material, usually by shoe rubbing. Walking in sandals, boots, or shoes that don’t fit properly for long periods of time can result in a blister. Having consistent foot moisture and humidity can easily lead to blister formation.
Prevention & Treatment
It is important to properly care for the affected area in order to prevent infection and ease the pain. Do not lance the blister and use a Band-Aid to provide pain relief. Also, be sure to keep your feet dry and wear proper fitting shoes. If you see blood or pus in a blister, seek assistance from a podiatrist.
